“A must visit wine region offering unmatched Vinifera varieties, spectacular views and incomparable culinary experiences”
Prince Edward County is located in the South Eastern part of Ontario: one hour from Kingston, two hours from Toronto and three hours from Ottawa.
The County is surrounded to the North and East by the Bay of Quinte shores and to the South and West, Lake Ontario. Long known for its history, scenic shorelines, and friendly “County Folk”, this unique island can now boast as being Eastern Canada’s newest wine destination!
Prince Edward County Wineries and Vineyards
Located on an island like peninsula on the opposite side of Lake Ontario to the Niagara region, the “County” is Ontario’s newest Designated Viticultural Area (DVA). The area now represents one of the VQA regions: Prince Edward County, Niagara Peninsula, Pelee Island and the north shores of Lake Erie. Its limestone rich soil and moderate climate make it ideally situated for viniculture and in particular the growing of Burgundy varieties (ie. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).
The County hosts over 35 commercial wineries (as of 2013) and over 50 wine grape growers. The combined effort of the group results in the cultivation of more than 1800 hectares of vineyard which produce over 800 tons of grapes and more that 600,000 litres of wine annually.
The terroir of the region is special because of the micro-climate created by lake Ontario; the lake effect softens the cold winters and cools the summer, and its limestone rich soils which help produce wines of distinctive character. The climate has its unique challenges (ie. the need to bury all exposed vines every winter) but the soil’s stark resemblance to Burgundy France has fed an almost unmatched growth in the number of wine makers willing to face these challenges (averaging 3 new producers a year over the last 10 years).
