Ahhh Fall. This fleeting season is one of our favourites. The crisp cool air heralds two months of county harvests, vibrant colours, cozy cardigans, and pumpkin spiced everything (most notably the coveted pumpkin spiced latte).
This is a season to celebrate the beauty of nature and the bounty of a good harvest. Fall flies by in a flash, so be sure to capitalize on the crisp, refreshing weather and beautiful leaves mother nature delivers while you can.
Here are 5 fun Fall activities you can enjoy in Prince Edward County.
Hit the fair!
Does anything excite your inner child more than the prospect of a fair? Embrace nostalgia on September 14th, 2019 at the fair in Milford, ON, affectionately referred to as Canada’s Best Little Country Fair. This year’s fair theme is “Back The Build”, so you’ll be supporting the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital by participating. You’ll be able to enjoy everything from live music and entertainment to log sawing to a dog show to pumpkin painting and a drumming circle, as well as much more! This little fair packs a big punch of Fall fun, it’s not to be missed!
Celebrate everything pumpkin at Pumpkinfest
Where can you wear a bright orange pumpkin-themed hat and blend in? In Wellington, of course! On October 19th 2019 (the first Saturday after Thanksgiving), Pumpkinfest kicks off with a pancake breakfast! The festival continues throughout the day, which will be filled with games, music, food, and of course the ever-famous pumpkin weigh-in! (The biggest pumpkin wins, and believe us when we say there are some BIG pumpkins!) Find a full schedule of events for Pumpkinfest here.
Go apple picking
Does anything say Fall like apple picking? We don’t think so! The only thing better than picking your own apples is gobbling down the delicious apple crisp you make from them, in our humble opinion. There are a variety of pick-your-own (PYO) apple orchards in PEC, though perhaps most notable is Campbell’s Orchards. If you don’t have time to pick your own apples but still want to enjoy this seasonal, local fruit, check out a list of farm stands here. (It also lists all PYO places for you die-hard DIY’ers out there.)
Participate in harvest at the wineries
If you’re a wine buff you’re going to want to listen up! Did you know you can actually participate in the first step of wine making – harvesting the grapes? That’s right! You can take a (tiny) step into the life of a winemakers and participate in the harvest as a volunteer! Check out participating wineries and harvest dates here. Some wineries, like Sandbanks Winery, even offer complimentary tours with a crush demonstration, grape stomping, and live music for everyone who participates in the Harvest. No matter what winery you choose to visit, volunteers are sure to be rewarded with ample amounts of food and fun!
Enjoy the leaves
Sandbanks Provincial Park is not just a summer destination, it’s also a gorgeous spot to enjoy the Fall foliage. Enjoy a hike through the park and around the dunes, observing the beauty of the Fall season while you do so. Pro Tip: The park is open until October 21, 2019, so you can even book a campsite and enjoy a secluded beach if you so desire, no crowds to speak of!
Sandbanks Provincial Park, in collaboration with Friends of Sandbanks, is also hosting a Sandbanks Fall Getaway Fun Run on September 15th, 2019. Come out and participate in a 5km or 10km Fun Run, which is also doubling as the Terry Fox Run – one event supporting two great organizations!
Fall is fleeting, make sure to get these fun Fall activities in before the season ends. After all, as the saying goes…winter is coming.
